A key box and a hidden spare key are not a security solution — they are a shared location with no audit trail, and if stolen, there is no way to recover control. A smart lock eliminates the problem at the root: there is no physical key to steal, every entry is recorded with a name and timestamp, every digital key grant is time-restricted, and any access can be revoked instantly.

Why storing a physical spare key is risky

The problem with a physical spare key is structural, not accidental. Three fundamental risks:

• Codes and locations get shared and cannot be retrieved. Once you tell someone the key box combination, they can pass it on. A copy left with a neighbor leaves your control entirely. You cannot know who has it.
• It is a target. A box at your door or a known hiding spot offers a direct entry route to anyone looking for one. A stolen physical key is a perfect copy of your home.
• No trace. Someone who enters with a key leaves no record. There is no way to know who came, when, or how long they stayed.

How a smart lock solves the spare key problem
