Nuki Door Sensor: Real-Time Door Status Monitoring

What is the Nuki Door Sensor?

The Nuki Door Sensor is a small magnetic sensor that detects the physical state of your door. It identifies in real time whether the door is open, closed, or locked, and relays that information to the Nuki app. The sensor consists of two parts mounted to the door frame and the door itself.

A smart lock can lock and unlock your door, but it cannot detect on its own whether the door is physically open or closed. The Nuki Door Sensor fills that gap, giving your smart lock system genuine situational awareness.

What does the Door Sensor do?

1. Door state detection

See in real time whether your door is open, closed, or locked — directly in the Nuki app. This is especially valuable from a security perspective when you're away from home.

2. Automatic lock trigger

The Door Sensor's most valuable feature is triggering automatic locking the moment the door closes. When you pull the door shut, the sensor detects the closure and sends a lock command to the smart lock. Forgetting to lock becomes a non-issue.

Without the Door Sensor, auto-locking works on a timer — for example, locking 20 seconds after the door was last opened. This means the lock could engage while you're still in the doorway. With the Door Sensor, the lock only activates once the door is fully closed.

3. Real-time push notifications

When used with the Nuki Bridge, you receive instant push notifications whenever the door state changes:

  • Notification when the door opens
  • Alert when the door has been left open for too long
  • Confirmation when the door closes and auto-locks

Installation guide

Step 1: Identify the parts

The Door Sensor has two components:

  • Main sensor: Mounts to the door leaf (contains battery and electronics)
  • Magnet: Mounts to the door frame

Step 2: Mount

Place the main sensor on the inside of your door and the magnet on the door frame. The two parts should be close together when the door is closed. Adhesive tape is used for mounting — no drilling required.

Step 3: Pair

Use the "Add Door Sensor" option in the Nuki app. The sensor is detected automatically and paired with your smart lock.

Step 4: Calibrate

The app will ask you to open and close the door a few times. This step ensures the sensor correctly identifies your door's open and closed positions.

Auto-lock scenarios

Lock on door close

The most common scenario: the lock engages the instant you pull the door shut. No need to think about locking when entering or leaving.

Delayed locking

Lock after a short delay (e.g. 5 seconds) once the door closes. Useful when you prefer the door not to lock immediately while you're still bringing bags inside.

Night mode

Instant locking when the door closes during certain hours (e.g. 22:00–07:00), delayed locking during daytime hours.

Security benefits

The Door Sensor adds multiple layers to home security:

  • Forget-to-lock protection: Auto-locking kicks in if you don't lock manually
  • Open-door alert: Notification if the door is left open for too long
  • Access verification: Confirmation that the door actually opened
  • Night security: Peace of mind that all doors are locked before you sleep

Smart home integration

Door Sensor data can serve as a trigger in smart home automations:

  • Apple HomeKit: Entry lights turn on when the door opens
  • Google Home: HVAC activates when you arrive home
  • Amazon Alexa: Welcome routine runs when the door opens

These integrations work through the Nuki Bridge, which forwards sensor data to smart home platforms.

FAQ

Can the Door Sensor be mounted on any door?

Yes. The adhesive mounting works on wood, metal, and PVC doors without causing damage. The gap between door and frame does not affect sensor performance.

How long does the Door Sensor battery last?

Battery life varies with usage frequency. The Nuki app notifies you when the battery runs low.

Can auto-locking work without the Door Sensor?

Yes, but only with a timer-based approach (the lock triggers a set number of seconds after opening). The Door Sensor enables door-state-based locking, which is more accurate and avoids locking while you're still in the doorway.
